Activity Programs at INH

Music and Me

We invite residents to listen to iPod Shuffles loaded with personalized song playlists. New research suggests that reconnecting people with dementia to their favorite music in this way is therapeutic and battles memory loss.

Our program, which we call Music and Me, was inspired by the award-winning 2014 documentary Alive Inside. The film features the late neurologist and award-winning author Oliver Sacks discussing the benefits of these music sessions. Sacks proposed that music “evokes emotion, and emotion can bring with it memory… It brings back the feeling of life when nothing else can.

The music seems to be most beneficial if the listener heard it often in the past. So, based on information provided by relatives, we are compiling lists of the residents’ personal favorites.

Thanks to the generosity of donors who gave more than $5,000 in contributions, we are able to offer the program to all residents.
