JULY 26—Island Nursing Home and Care Center residents have decorated several buoys for the Penobscot East Resource Center’s 7th Annual auction of artist-enhanced Maine lobster buoys. The auction, which is Penobscot East’s largest fundraiser of the year, will take place on Monday, August 1, in Stonington, at Opera House Arts at 5:30 p.m.
The INH residents are among numerous artists, some of them famous, who decorate buoys every year to raise money for the Penobscot East Resource Center. The non-profit organization works to secure a sustainable future for the fisheries and fishing communities of Eastern Maine and beyond, a cause that spoke to some of the INH artists because of their ties to the fishing industry.
“I’m very touched that an older generation, as represented by these INH artists, has chosen to lend a hand to our cause in this way,” said Bobbi Billings, Penobscot East’s administrative director and the person who conceived of the fundraiser 7 years ago.
INH artists are Harriet Leighton, Theresa Lara, Jeannie Welch, Marion Baumann, Hattie Webb, Mae Gove and Anna Powers.
This year the auction will take place at a new venue, Stonington’s handicap-accessible Opera House Arts. The buoys can be previewed at www.penobscoteast.org throughout July. For more information or to place a silent bid before July 29th call Bobbi Billings at 367-2708.
